Clay pipes as a research topic

The results of fifteen years of research work justify the role of clay pipes as an important component in excavation finds in recent archaeology. Detailed study of clay-pipe fragments, which commonly show both decorations and marks, tell us much about their provenance, the political climate of the past, as well as about industrial spying and imitations or piracy.

It is often possible to date these every-day objects from the 17th to 19th century to within a few years. Thus, the clay pipe has become a" key fossil" for the recent archaeologist and can help in dating the associated finds. Apart from this, the clay pipe functions as a focus for the interaction of many different disciplines: archaeology, anthropology, cultural and craft studies as well as the history of drug use.
